James Whiteside, Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theatre

James Whiteside has established himself as the crown prince of American Ballet Theatre. (Quite literally—this spring he’ll be dancing as the prince in Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella.) And his story is, fittingly, an aspiring dancer’s fairy tale. After being passed up by ABT as a teenager, Whiteside launched his career in Boston. Ten years later, on a day off, he auditioned again—and got in. Still, Whiteside, 30, isn’t content to rest on his laurels. “I have an insatiable need to create,” he says. “I don’t want to just be a ballet dancer but an artist with strong roots in dance.”
